Ancestral Homeland is one of two companion baskets, which are created in the traditional Cherokee double-weave style. The interior splints are made from reproductions on paper of the Indian Removal Act of 1830; the exterior is woven from the artist’s double-exposed, hand-tinted black and white photograph. These baskets are companion pieces representing both ends of the Trail of Tears and our duality of belonging to both places now.
